Britain’s leading spy technology base is calling on a diverse range of experts, including Christmas pantomime costume designers, to spark creativity in the development of future gadgets.

The Government Communications Centre (HMGCC), established on the brink of World War Two, is seeking innovative methods to conceal advanced technology within clothing. Engineers at this James Bond-esque facility are collaborating with professionals in television, film, and pantomime to explore possibilities for integrating and wearing this technology.

Previously, the agency sought specialists to assist in crafting prosthetic facial disguises using lifelike materials to evade detection systems.

Established in 1938 at Hanslope Park, this secretive agency initially focused on creating secure communication channels for international spies and diplomats. Notably, renowned figure Alan Turing collaborated with HMGCC on speech encryption during World War Two, following his pivotal contributions to breaking the Enigma code at Bletchley Park.

Today, the base is dedicated to addressing the UK’s technological security requirements for both domestic and global operations, including intelligence gathering. HMGCC employs hundreds of scientists and engineers and falls under the oversight of Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.

Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty emphasized the evolving national security landscape, stressing the importance of innovation in developing cutting-edge technology to counter emerging threats and safeguard the nation.

CEO George Williamson of HMGCC highlighted the diverse range of technology disciplines covered in their collaborative initiatives, from quantum sensing to artificial intelligence. He underscored the agency’s openness to engaging with talent from various sectors, such as film and fashion, to enhance national security efforts through innovative cross-sector collaborations.
