A light dusting of snow is anticipated in various parts of the United Kingdom in the upcoming days, according to meteorologists. A significant low-pressure system is approaching from the northwest and is forecasted to move southward as temperatures decrease over the week. Despite reaching a high of 22.7C near Braintree, Essex on Tuesday, temperatures are expected to plummet, with daytime highs dropping to just 6C over the weekend.

This shift in weather conditions is likely to bring snowfall to regions like the Scottish Highlands and other elevated areas. Meteorologist Jo Farrow from Netweather mentioned in the company’s blog that the movement of the system across the UK could elevate the chances of snowfall, especially in mountainous and hilly regions. Additionally, there may be a change in the distribution of thunderstorms.

The reference to a “move around the UK” is related to students leaving home for university ahead of the upcoming “Welcome Weeks” on campus. With the weather set to change significantly, Ms. Farrow cautions that the likelihood of experiencing snow, particularly on Sunday, in their new surroundings is increasing. Although the snow is not expected to cause disruptions, it is advised to prepare with adequate coats for the first semester.

Netweather’s blog further advises to have waterproof coats ready as weather systems are expected to come in from the Atlantic, making Northern Ireland, NW England, and Wales wetter regions. For those heading north, thermal clothing may be necessary in the coming months.

Looking ahead to the period from Sunday, September 14, to Tuesday, September 23, the Met Office website indicates a generally unsettled weather pattern dominated by low pressure systems, leading to showers or longer spells of rain across the UK. There is a potential for more widespread rain, strong winds, or gales towards the end of the weekend as a deeper area of low pressure may move close to or into the UK.

Recent days have seen rainy conditions, especially in south Wales and the Southwest of England, with significant rainfall recorded in various areas. This has resulted in flood warnings and alerts being issued in some regions, such as for the South Cornwall coast from Gribbin Head to Rame Head.
