Skate Canada disclosed on Wednesday that Mike Slipchuk will retire as high-performance director following the 2026-27 season, concluding a 20-year tenure in the position. Slipchuk became a part of Skate Canada in 2006 and oversaw Canadian figure skaters’ achievement of 10 Olympic and 24 world championship medals during his leadership.
Notably, Canada secured four Olympic medals during Slipchuk’s stewardship at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, including gold in the team event and for ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. Virtue and Moir’s gold medals made them the most successful Olympic figure skaters in history, with three gold and two silver medals.
Despite recent Olympic setbacks, such as no medals in Beijing 2022 and only one bronze medal won by Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier in ice dance at Milan Cortina earlier this year, Canada has maintained a strong presence in the figure skating world. Noteworthy achievements include Patrick Chan’s three consecutive men’s world titles from 2011 to 2013 and Virtue and Moir’s three gold medals.
The latest Canadian world champions were pairs skaters Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps in 2024. Skate Canada has confirmed that Slipchuk will continue to contribute in an advisory capacity post-retirement to aid in the smooth transition to a new high-performance director.
