Soap opera enthusiasts were taken aback by the revelation that Jamie Borthwick, known for his role as Jay Brown in EastEnders since 2006, will not be making a return to the show, as reported exclusively by The Mirror.
BBC Studios, the production company of EastEnders, confirmed the news stating, “Jamie Borthwick will not be reprising his role in EastEnders. We do not provide details on individual cases.”
This unforeseen announcement follows previous reports that Jamie was set to return to the show shortly after a suspension for the use of offensive language towards disabled individuals.
The suspension occurred in June, six months after Jamie’s appearance on Strictly Come Dancing, where he allegedly made the derogatory remarks during a live episode at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom.
Allegedly, Jamie was recorded using inappropriate language towards disabled individuals, which was captured on video and shared with a friend.
In response to the incident, Jamie issued a statement expressing regret for his actions and lack of understanding of the offensive term he used.
Throughout his tenure on EastEnders, Jamie’s character, Jay Brown, was involved in significant plotlines, including the loss of his father and his relationship with Lola Pearce, who tragically succumbed to cancer in May 2023.
Jamie was honored with the Best Actor award at the 2023 Inside Soap Awards for his portrayal, and the show received recognition for the storyline involving Lola Pearce-Brown’s battle with a brain tumor.
The actor also emerged victorious in the 2023 Strictly Christmas special alongside Nancy Xu.
Jamie’s final appearance on EastEnders aired on August 19.
