A man who utilized encrypted messaging to facilitate the illegal trade of drugs and firearms has been sentenced to prison. Allan Hughes, 30, hailing from Clydebank in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, was apprehended after a significant investigation by the Organised Crime Partnership, comprising the National Crime Agency (NCA) and Police Scotland. Hughes, known as “Ali G,” was taken into custody in June 2024 after a cash and heroin exchange worth £15,000 was intercepted. Prior to his arrest, authorities had seized several of his electronic devices, revealing a plethora of messages on encrypted platforms showcasing firearms, ammunition, and drugs meant for distribution.
In November 2025, Hughes admitted to participating in serious organized crime at the High Court in Glasgow. Today, on January 8, he was sentenced to six years and nine months in prison at the same court and will also be subjected to a three-year Serious Crime Prevention Order (SCPO). Hughes is currently serving a separate sentence related to drug offenses.
Philip Marshall, Regional Head of Investigations at the NCA, emphasized Hughes’ role as a key player in the illegal drug and firearm trade, using encrypted messaging apps to offer these illicit goods to potential buyers. Marshall highlighted the severe threat posed by individuals like Hughes who prioritize profit over public safety by selling firearms without regard for the associated risks.
Detective Chief Inspector Laura Sands of the Organised Crime and Counter Terrorism Unit reiterated the commitment to combatting serious organized crime through collaborative efforts with partner agencies. Sands encouraged the public to provide information on organized crime activities to aid in ongoing law enforcement efforts by contacting them through the designated channels.
