A company in Saskatchewan is currently engaged in drilling operations to extract hydrogen from underground sources on a commercial scale rather than relying on fossil fuel production. Regina-based Max Power Mining recently commenced drilling its third well at the Lawson Complex in southern Saskatchewan, aiming to establish a large-scale commercial natural hydrogen system, potentially revolutionizing the primary energy sector.
According to Chad Levesque, the president and director of the company, hydrogen plays a crucial role in various industries such as ammonia production, petroleum refining, and transitioning towards cleaner energy sources. To address the ecological impact of hydrogen sourcing, natural occurring hydrogen emerges as a viable alternative.
Hydrogen, known for its versatility as a fuel and electricity generator with water as the only byproduct, presents a cleaner energy option for emission-heavy sectors like transportation and steelmaking. Currently, the majority of commercially available hydrogen is grey hydrogen, produced from fossil fuels without emission reduction measures, resulting in significant carbon dioxide emissions.
Contrastingly, green hydrogen, produced through water electrolysis using renewable energy, offers a cleaner production method but remains costlier compared to grey hydrogen. In this context, natural hydrogen, also referred to as white hydrogen, presents a unique advantage as it can be extracted with lower greenhouse gas emissions using existing extraction techniques employed in natural gas and helium extraction.
The geological makeup of Saskatchewan allows for the accumulation of hydrogen in sand beds sealed under layers of shale and salt, making it a promising location for natural hydrogen extraction. Despite the potential benefits, challenges remain in extracting hydrogen efficiently from underground deposits, with limitations on extraction rates and production scale.
As Max Power Mining continues its exploration at the Lawson Complex, the company aims to determine the feasibility of extracting natural hydrogen, focusing on factors like location, quantity, and extraction ease. While early discoveries in various locations like Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia indicate the growing interest in natural hydrogen, the industry is still in its nascent stages, with uncertainties regarding its widespread impact on decarbonization efforts.
