Following this trend, Sainsbury’s has exclusively disclosed its December closure schedule to the Daily Mirror, including the full-day closure on Christmas Day, in compliance with the Christmas Day (Trading) Act 2004, which mandates closure on that day.
This legislation ensures employees have the opportunity to spend time with their families during the holiday season by prohibiting large retailers from operating on Christmas Day. Recognizing the cultural and religious importance of Christmas in the UK, the law prioritizes the well-being of retail workers.
A spokesperson from Sainsbury’s shared the supermarket’s schedule for December 2025 with the Daily Mirror. Most supermarkets and convenience stores will operate from 6am to 11pm from December 18-23, with adjusted hours on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
On Christmas Day, all Sainsbury’s stores will remain closed, with operations resuming on Boxing Day and normal hours from December 27-30. New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day will also have adjusted hours, with petrol filling stations following a similar schedule.
For customers in Scotland, stores will operate on specific hours on January 2nd. It is advised to check the store locator on the Sainsbury’s website for the most up-to-date information on opening hours for each location.
The upcoming holiday schedule for 2025 includes Christmas Eve on December 24, Christmas Day on December 25, Boxing Day on December 26, New Year’s Eve on December 31, and New Year’s Day on January 1, 2026.
