A drone from Russia targeted the headquarters of Ukraine’s SBU security service in Kyiv on Friday, hitting one of the most significant locations during the conflict as Russia heightened its air assault campaign against Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the drone was specifically aimed at the office of the head of the Security Service in that building, following a discussion with SBU acting head Oleksandr Poklad.

Ukraine deemed the attack a significant escalation of the conflict, with Zelenskyy promising a response as Moscow’s airstrikes on the Ukrainian capital continued for the tenth consecutive day. The aftermath of the attack was visible with dense black smoke billowing in Kyiv’s historic city center, resulting in at least 12 individuals sustaining injuries, as reported by the city’s mayor.

Throughout over four and a half years of warfare with Russia, Ukrainian government structures have seldom been targeted in drone and missile assaults. Zelenskyy declared that he had instructed for an appropriate and visible retaliation, reflecting the nature of the strike wherever feasible.

Zelenskyy mentioned that Poklad briefed him on the preparations for an active response to the Russian strikes, with a picture of their meeting shared by Zelenskyy from his office in Kyiv. The locations for the response were identified, according to Zelenskyy.

The strike on the SBU coincided with the expected visits of U.S. negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv in the next two days. Diplomatic negotiations to resolve the conflict have been stalled for months while the fighting persists along over 1,200 kilometers of the front line, and Ukrainian cities face continual bombardment. Kyiv is also escalating its attacks within Russia to undermine its economic capacity to sustain the war.

Russia’s recent shift in tactics during the conflict has been notable. Daytime strikes are becoming more frequent, utilizing fast-flying, jet-powered drones, intensifying the terror for residents with continuous disruptions both day and night. The distress among residents in Kyiv has amplified with the incessant sound of air-raid sirens becoming a daily occurrence, leaving people fatigued and uncertain about their safety.

Residents like Volodymyr Bovsunovskyi are finding daily activities challenging, with shopping trips turning into nightmares due to the constant alerts and risks. Ivan Datsiv, an IT worker, experienced the destruction caused by a Russian drone in his apartment, contemplating moving to a safer city to protect his family from the ongoing danger.

The situation in Kyiv remains tense, with residents grappling with fear, uncertainty, and the harsh reality of living in a war zone. The continuous attacks have taken a toll on the psychological and physical well-being of individuals, prompting some to consider leaving their homes in search of safety and peace.
