On a chilly winter day, a cozy country pub can be the perfect retreat. I had long been eager to visit a charming country pub nestled in a quaint Vale of Glamorgan village for three compelling reasons. Firstly, its culinary reputation was stellar. Secondly, having cycled past it numerous times, the temptation to abandon the bike and enjoy a pint was strong.
However, the most significant reason for my visit was the fact that this pub was owned by a renowned sports figure. Two decades ago, I witnessed Gavin Henson make a remarkable and crucial kick in Welsh rugby history. Despite not being the first-choice kicker that day, Henson’s audacious 44-meter kick from a challenging angle secured a victory for Wales against England, marking the start of a new era in Welsh rugby.
Henson, known for his distinctive appearance and celebrity status alongside singer Charlotte Church, rose to fame in the mid-2000s, earning the moniker “Welsh Posh and Becks.” Beyond his celebrity persona, Henson was a dedicated and talented athlete who captivated audiences. Despite his past spotlight, recent insights suggest his current preference for a private life in the tranquil village of St Brides Major, near his hometown.
In 2019, Henson and his wife, Katie, assumed ownership of The Fox, a move that garnered attention. Following a renovation, the pub reopened in early 2020, receiving accolades for its food and warm ambiance, with Henson himself occasionally assisting guests. Subsequently, the pub faced challenges in hiring a new head chef amidst the hospitality industry turmoil caused by the pandemic and Brexit.
Presently, The Fox exudes a timeless charm and comfort, with its inviting decor and festive Christmas adornments creating a welcoming atmosphere. Sampling Butty Bach ale and Jeremy Clarkson’s Hawkstone lager, we relished the menu offerings while admiring the reasonable wine selection.
The Sunday menu boasted a concise yet enticing selection of starters and main courses. Our choices of crispy ham hock with confit egg yolk, and cod and salmon fishcake with samphire and caper butter, impressed with their flavors and presentation. For mains, the roast sirloin of Welsh beef and shoulder of Welsh lamb showcased exceptional quality and taste, accompanied by a delectable array of sides.
Although too satiated for desserts, the overall dining experience was delightful. The bill, comprising starters, mains, beverages, and kids’ meals, was reasonable, reflecting the value offered. The inviting ambiance and quality cuisine left a lasting impression, evident in the contentment of fellow diners expressing intentions to return. My own experience mirrored their sentiment, despite missing a chance encounter with a sporting idol.
