Royal Mail has issued a caution regarding possible delays in service affecting more than 100 UK postcodes this week. The postal service identified 38 delivery offices that could face disruptions due to severe weather conditions and higher-than-usual employee absenteeism. These offices collectively cover approximately 100 postcodes nationwide.

According to a company spokesperson, recent adverse weather events and increased sick leave have caused temporary interruptions in specific delivery routes. Royal Mail reassured customers that the majority of mail is being delivered as scheduled but acknowledged the frustration when deliveries are delayed.

In response to any disruptions, the company stated that it would mobilize additional resources to expedite the restoration of deliveries on affected routes. This announcement follows a BBC report alleging that some letters were being held in Royal Mail offices for extended periods, with claims that packages were being prioritized over letters in certain depots.

Royal Mail mentioned the surge in parcel deliveries due to the rise in online shopping, while the volume of addressed letters within their network is declining. With a service obligation to deliver mail six days a week, Royal Mail aims to maintain timely delivery of both letters and parcels.

Despite receiving approval from Ofcom to eliminate second-class letter deliveries on Saturdays and transition to alternate weekday services, the implementation has been delayed due to unresolved negotiations with the Communication Workers Union. The initial pilot rollout across 35 delivery offices will eventually expand nationwide to all 1,200 sites.
