A prominent candidate from Reform UK is under fire for making controversial remarks suggesting that individuals of non-Christian faiths should consume bacon as a way to demonstrate their commitment to Christianity. Chris Parry, who is running for the mayoral position in Hampshire and the Solent, shared an article expressing concerns about migrants undergoing baptism in hotel bathtubs to secure asylum.
In a social media post, Dr. Parry suggested that individuals from different religious backgrounds should eat bacon for a month to validate their Christian beliefs. Additionally, he shared an image of a microwave designated for Halal food only, and when asked what he would put in the microwave, he responded with “sausages,” despite acknowledging that pork is prohibited in Islamic dietary laws.
Furthermore, Dr. Parry, a former senior Royal Navy officer, reiterated his call for potential Christian converts to consume pork for a month. These statements have intensified calls for Nigel Farage to dismiss Dr. Parry, who is already facing criticism for previous remarks urging David Lammy to return to the Caribbean.
Anna Turley, Chair of the Labour Party, condemned Dr. Parry’s comments as unacceptable and unfit for a public office candidate. She criticized Farage for not taking action against Parry’s racist and divisive views, which she believes go against fostering unity in communities.
Dr. Parry also raised doubts about the loyalty of eight public figures from minority backgrounds towards the UK, including Shabana Mahmood, Sadiq Khan, Humza Yousaf, Zarah Sultana, and Anas Sarwar. Responding to the backlash, Dr. Parry defended his statements as light-hearted and emphasized the need for thorough verification of asylum claims made on religious grounds.
