Pregnant teenager Bella Culley, labeled as a ‘drug mule,’ is nearing a potential plea agreement in Georgia that could lead to her release from prison. The 19-year-old British national faces severe penalties in Georgia for allegedly smuggling illegal substances into the country. During a recent court session in Tbilisi, it was revealed that discussions regarding a plea deal are progressing positively. This agreement may result in Bella’s freedom upon payment of an undisclosed fine, especially considering her claim of being coerced under duress. Notably, Bella, visibly pregnant at 22 weeks, appeared in court dressed in black.
When questioned by Judge Giorgi Gelashvili about the status of the plea agreement, defense attorney Malkhaz Salakia expressed optimism, stating that negotiations are advancing smoothly. The family is currently preparing for the technical aspects of the agreement. Additionally, Prosecutor Vakhtang Tsalughelashvili confirmed that the prosecution has outlined conditions for the potential plea agreement. Both sides acknowledged the undeniable evidence presented in the case during the court proceedings.
Despite the plea for bail being denied, the next court hearing is scheduled for October 9. Bella’s mother, Lyanne Kennedy, present at the hearing, expressed her love and support for her daughter. Following the court session, Bella’s lawyer, Malkhaz Salakaia, mentioned that the discussions are at an advanced stage, emphasizing the necessity of the financial aspect. He hinted at the possibility of mitigating Bella’s sentence based on the fine paid, indicating a correlation between the amount of the fine and the reduction in the prison term. However, Bella’s family is still deliberating on the exact monetary sum required, leaving the final decision pending.
The circumstances leading to Bella’s arrest in Tbilisi unfolded after she disappeared from Thailand and was subsequently apprehended at Tbilisi International Airport in May. Authorities allegedly discovered marijuana and hashish in her possession. In previous court appearances, Bella vehemently denied any voluntary involvement in the illicit activity, citing coercion through torture. She emphasized her innocence by highlighting negative results in her blood tests and expressed her desire to uphold her family’s honor.
Furthermore, during a later court appearance in July, it was disclosed that Bella is expecting a baby boy. Reflecting on her unexpected ordeal, Bella shared her perspective with the judge, expressing disbelief at the unfolding events. The ongoing legal proceedings continue to shed light on Bella Culley’s complex situation, eliciting public interest in the evolving case developments.
