A teacher was assaulted by a parent in front of students at a school in Brazil after instructing a student to refrain from using a mobile phone. The 53-year-old teacher at Guara Education Centre 4 in Brazil’s Federal District had advised the student to focus on the lesson instead of using her phone. Subsequently, the student’s father, Thiago Lenin Sousa, arrived at the school and physically attacked the teacher, punching him nine times in the head. The violent incident was captured by school cameras, showing the teacher trying to defend himself while colleagues and the student also intervened to stop the assault.
Following the altercation, police arrested Sousa on charges of making threats and assault. The teacher reported that she had simply instructed the student not to use her phone and focus on the classwork, leading to the unexpected violent outburst from the parent. This incident has raised concerns in the local community regarding school safety and the presence of smartphones in classrooms.
The state’s education department responded by initiating an investigation into the incident and issued a statement condemning any form of violence within educational institutions. They emphasized their commitment to maintaining a secure and respectful environment for all members of the community.
In response to the incident, many individuals in Brazil have expressed their views on social media, questioning the allowance of phones in schools. Some have criticized the parent’s behavior, highlighting the potential impact of parental interference on teachers’ authority and the overall education system.
The incident has sparked conversations about the need for clear regulations on mobile phone usage in educational settings and the importance of upholding a safe and conducive learning environment for students and teachers alike.
