The Ottawa Redblacks have now set a new record for the longest losing streak in the modern era of the Canadian Football League (CFL). Following their 33-21 defeat to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday night, the Redblacks marked their 15th consecutive loss, extending back to the previous season. This surpasses the previous record held by the Shreveport Pirates, who endured 14 straight losses in 1994, as confirmed by CFL historian Steve Daniel.
Expressing his disappointment, avid Redblacks fan Jimmy Fata, who witnessed the historic loss in Winnipeg, highlighted the team’s unknown struggles and the desire to address the underlying issues. The tradition of cutting a “wood cookie” for each touchdown during home games has been sparse lately, according to Fata.
Not only does this losing streak establish a modern-day CFL record, but it also ranks as the third-longest in the entire CFL history dating back to 1907. Another loss against the Montreal Alouettes would tie the Redblacks with the Hamilton Wildcats for the second-longest losing streak.
Reflecting on the team’s challenges, Daniel emphasized the need for a continued roster rebuild, particularly on the defensive side. Despite recent changes made by head coach Ryan Dinwiddie, the Redblacks are yet to find success in the red zone, a critical area for scoring points in football.
Fata emphasized the importance of unwavering support for the team during tough times, likening it to supporting a child through thick and thin. Despite the string of defeats, he remains a dedicated fan, optimistic about the team’s potential for improvement.
