O2 has officially announced a swift free upgrade for millions of its users, introducing faster 5G+ services throughout the UK. This upgraded service offers improved mobile coverage and significantly faster download speeds, promising a 50% increase compared to older 4G networks.
Aside from speed and reliability enhancements, users can also expect longer battery life as devices consume less power by no longer needing to connect simultaneously to both 4G and 5G networks. Unlike traditional 5G, which relies on 4G support, this new 5G+ service is more efficient.
The upgrade is currently being rolled out to users with 5G+ compatible devices and SIM cards, reaching over 700 towns and cities across the UK. Christian Hindennach, Chief Commercial Officer at Virgin Media O2, highlighted that this enhanced 5G+ service is available to all O2 customers on any plan, unlike other networks. He emphasized that the upgrade improves performance in high-traffic areas, benefiting both residents and visitors.
For those interested in checking local availability, O2 provides a postcode tool on their website. Some popular 5G+ ready devices include the iPhone 15, 16 (including 16e), and 17 ranges, as well as the Google Pixel 9 (including Fold) and 10 series.
5G+ is an upgraded version of 5G networks that utilizes advanced technologies such as higher-frequency spectrum, improved antennas, and network optimization to deliver faster speeds, lower latency, and increased capacity.
