Nina Dobrev, known for her role in Vampire Diaries, and Shaun White, the Olympic snowboarder, have decided to end their engagement and split after a five-year relationship. The last time they were seen together was on August 31, 2025, in Los Angeles. Dobrev was spotted without her 5-carat diamond engagement ring at the Eternity premiere during the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on September 7.
Dobrev, who portrayed Elena Gilbert in the popular CW vampire series, removed her Instagram post announcing the engagement, which had been pinned since White’s romantic proposal in October 2024.
Their mutual decision to part ways was made with love and respect, according to a source close to the couple. White had various plans to propose to Dobrev, initially intending to do so during their summer vacation but changing his mind after Dobrev’s knee injury from a dirt-biking accident.
After feeling Dobrev might have anticipated a proposal during their trip to South Africa, White chose to propose during a regular week in late October, organizing every detail meticulously, including the location at The Golden Swan restaurant in New York City.
The engagement ring, a five-carat Lorraine Schwartz piece, was hidden in different spots around the house by White to keep it a surprise. Dobrev was tricked into thinking she was invited to an exclusive event but was pleasantly surprised to find only White and a photographer waiting for her.
The couple waited a few days before announcing their engagement publicly. Their relationship began in 2019 and became official on Instagram in 2020 when White shared photos of Dobrev cutting his hair during the lockdown.
Throughout their five-year relationship, they supported each other’s careers and were frequently seen together on red carpets. Dobrev cheered on White during his final Winter Olympics in Beijing in 2022.
