In a nighttime aerial assault that lasted for hours, Russia launched numerous missiles and drones at the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and its surrounding area, resulting in the deaths of at least 16 individuals, as confirmed by officials on Thursday.
The attack on Kyiv by Moscow’s forces, which included ballistic missiles, exploited Ukraine’s limited supply of U.S.-made Patriot air defense interceptors, the only system capable of intercepting such missiles in its arsenal. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made appeals for additional Patriot interceptors from other countries, but international reserves are depleted due to ongoing conflicts, including the Iran war and Ukraine’s prolonged battle against Russia.
The overnight assault by Russia also involved cruise missiles and high-speed jet-powered drones, further challenging Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, according to the Ukrainian air force. Explosions reverberated through the city of Kyiv, with the primary target being the city itself, although impacts were reported at 28 locations throughout the country. Zelenskyy reported around 40 people injured, with air raid warnings remaining in effect until dawn.
The Russian Defence Ministry claimed that the attack targeted an industrial site in Kyiv producing components for Ukraine’s Flamingo cruise missiles, along with other facilities involved in drone production and storage, an ammunition depot, and a logistics center.
In response to the assault on Kyiv, the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command activated military aviation operations, ground-based air defense systems, and radar reconnaissance. NATO military aircraft, including Polish and Spanish jets, were deployed to monitor airspace, while Romania reported an incident involving an unauthorized drone near its border with Ukraine.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized Russia’s actions, accusing it of challenging NATO and neighboring states’ sovereignty, thereby escalating the risks associated with the ongoing conflict. Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to face challenges in obtaining missile defense systems, with reports indicating a decline in U.S. Patriot inventory levels, despite ongoing production efforts by Lockheed Martin.
The overnight strikes in Kyiv resulted in damage to residential buildings, medical facilities, and educational institutions across multiple districts. Emergency responders rescued individuals trapped in the rubble, with reports of casualties and extensive property damage. Ukraine has also retaliated with drone strikes on Russian soil, targeting oil facilities, while Russia claimed to have shot down numerous Ukrainian drones in response.
As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine persists, both sides continue to engage in drone and missile attacks, with neither gaining a significant advantage along the front lines.
