New Look, a well-known fashion retailer, is facing challenges as it downsizes its store network across the UK. With over 600 stores in the past, the chain now operates just above 330 outlets due to recent restructurings, with its Scarborough location set to close on September 17.
This year has witnessed a series of store closures in various regions such as Wales, Scotland, Essex, and Cornwall, raising concerns among consumers as prominent brands disappear from local shopping areas. The company attributes these closures to rising costs and shifting consumer preferences towards online shopping, exacerbated by recent government policies like the National Insurance increase.
Despite reducing its physical footprint, New Look is focusing on digital expansion, investing in online operations and testing new retail concepts like “omni-channel” strategies. The retailer recently allocated £3 million to enhance its Greater Manchester stores, demonstrating a commitment to evolving its business model.
A New Look spokesperson emphasized the importance of a balanced approach, combining physical stores with a strong online presence to cater to their 10 million customers. The closures this year have left empty spaces on several high streets, with locations like Wickford in Essex still vacant since shutting down earlier in the year after 15 years of operation.
