Netflix will no longer be accessible on some older Amazon Fire TV devices starting June 3. Amazon confirmed that first-generation Fire TV Stick models, introduced over a decade ago, will no longer be supported by Netflix. This change impacts owners of Amazon Fire TV Stick (2014), Amazon Fire TV Stick with Alexa voice remote (2014), and Amazon Fire TV (2014).
The reason behind this block is related to the AV1 codec technology, which enables streaming platforms to offer higher resolution at an additional cost, a feature not supported by the older Fire TV Sticks. Netflix aims to prevent customers from paying for services they cannot access, prompting the discontinuation of the app on these devices.
To determine if your Fire TV device is affected, navigate to Settings > My Fire TV > About on your Fire TV. The following devices will no longer support Netflix:
– Amazon Fire TV Stick (2014)
– Amazon Fire TV Stick with Alexa voice remote (2014)
– Amazon Fire TV (2014)
Amazon has assured that Netflix will continue to be available on other Fire TV devices. There are newer Fire Stick models available, including 4K options and the Max version, offering the exclusive Ambient Experience feature, turning TVs into dynamic works of art and allowing users to customize their viewing experience with widgets and sticky notes.
