Conservative and Bloc Members of Parliament are urging an immediate convening of the House of Commons public safety committee to investigate allegations of espionage involving a former Canadian intern who was apprehended by Belgian authorities on suspicion of espionage.

Expressing deep concerns, Conservative MP Frank Caputo emphasized the need to scrutinize Canada’s national security screening procedures in light of these serious allegations. Caputo stressed the importance of assessing potential security loopholes that could have jeopardized sensitive information and the security of Canada and its allies.

The individual in question, Biwei Zhang, served as an intern at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium. Although Belgian officials did not disclose her identity, a CBC News investigation identified Zhang as a systems engineer with an economics background.

Zhang’s professional history includes previous roles at the Canadian Space Agency and Statistics Canada. European security sources, including Reuters, reported suspicions around her conduct, citing instances where she displayed excessive curiosity towards colleagues, accessed unauthorized areas, and potentially retrieved files beyond her designated responsibilities within SHAPE’s IT Department.

Zhang is currently detained by Belgian security authorities, pending further investigation into the allegations against her.

In response to the unfolding situation, Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree has pledged to delve into Canada’s security screening protocols and address the circumstances surrounding Zhang’s internship at NATO’s military headquarters. Emphasizing the importance of transparency, Anandasangaree highlighted the need to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The incident has prompted discussions about the efficacy of Canada’s security screening mechanisms. Prime Minister Mark Carney reassured that Canadian security agencies were actively involved in the investigation from the outset, indicating a proactive approach to the situation.
