A mother’s anticipated £2,500 family vacation in Turkey turned into a nightmare when she slipped on a wet floor aboard a “pirate boat” and fractured her leg in three places.
Shannon Hill, 34, planned this trip with her spouse, marking their first overseas vacation since 2019. Accompanied by their children, Dexter and Penelope, along with Shannon’s mother-in-law, they embarked on a two-week holiday in Antalya, Turkey, starting on May 6. The initial week at the four-star resort was described by Shannon as meeting all their expectations for a memorable family getaway.
Their plans took a drastic turn on May 16 during a pre-booked “pirate ship boat trip” with their children. While using the restroom onboard, Shannon slipped on a wet floor without any warning signs, resulting in a severe leg injury that required immediate medical attention. Following her fall, doctors confirmed three fractures in her lower right leg, necessitating surgery involving screws and a metal plate to mend the bones. Shannon underwent distressing moments during and after the operation, enduring excruciating pain.
After enduring three agonizing days at a Turkish hospital, Shannon returned to the UK on their scheduled flight, her leg immobilized in a cast. Upon consulting NHS physicians in the UK, she discovered that the surgical approach taken abroad differed from what would have been done domestically, requiring corrective surgery.
Shannon’s recovery journey has been challenging, involving extensive rehabilitation post-surgery, with the prospect of enduring years of physiotherapy. The traumatic incident has instilled a fear of wet surfaces and boats in her, deterring her from planning any future trips.
Reflecting on the unfortunate incident, Shannon, a private tutor from Epsom, Surrey, recalled the distressing moment of her fall and subsequent struggles with mobility. She emphasized the impact on her daily life, highlighting the ongoing discomfort and limitations she faces, even after initial treatment and rehabilitation efforts.
The harrowing experience has significantly marred what was meant to be a joyous family holiday, prompting Shannon to reconsider future travel plans due to lingering apprehensions. The boat trip operator acknowledged the incident as “unfortunate” and highlighted their efforts to assist Shannon promptly following the accident, despite the unforeseen circumstances.
