Morrisons customers are expressing frustration over a recent implementation of fees for ATM cash withdrawals. Stakeford shoppers have voiced their discontent on the local Morrisons Daily store’s Facebook page regarding this change. The cash machine is managed by an external provider, meaning the store does not regulate pricing decisions. The introduction of this fee is reportedly part of a trial at a few Morrisons Daily outlets.
In a post made anonymously, a customer shared, “The cash machine at Morrisons Daily now charges for withdrawing your own money.” Some individuals have expressed plans to contact their Member of Parliament regarding this issue. Notably, a significant number of free-to-use cash machines have vanished from UK high streets since January 2018, as reported by the Payment Choice Alliance.
Moreover, data shows that the average UK adult withdrew £1,352 from ATMs in 2025, indicating a 5% decrease compared to the previous year’s £1,424. Morrisons disclosed annual losses of £381 million for the year ending October 26, largely attributed to a £281 million interest payment on its debts. Despite a reduction from the previous year’s losses, the company, owned by US private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, finished the year with a significant debt of £3.1 billion.
The supermarket chain cited increased expenses and a cyber incident leading to an IT systems disruption just before the 2024 Christmas season as contributing factors to its financial challenges. Despite these setbacks, Morrisons reported a 3.4% growth in like-for-like sales during the Christmas period, with a notable surge in sales of its premium own-brand products. The company’s chief executive, Rami Baitieh, commended the performance, highlighting consistent sales growth, stable EBITDA, and market share retention amid a competitive retail environment.
