Meta Platforms refuted allegations made by U.S. states asserting that the company deliberately aimed to create addiction among children on its Facebook and Instagram platforms for profit as a significant trial commenced on Tuesday. A coalition of 29 U.S. states filed a lawsuit against Meta, seeking potentially substantial financial penalties and alterations to Meta’s business practices. Leading states including California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey accused Meta of intentionally designing Facebook and Instagram to engage young users, leading to mental health issues and deceiving consumers about the platforms’ safety. The states accused Meta of violating federal regulations by inappropriately gathering and utilizing children’s personal data.

The trial, taking place in an Oakland, California federal court, is deemed a critical legal examination of social media’s impact on young users. Meta, along with other social media giants like Snap, TikTok’s parent company ByteDance, and YouTube’s parent company Alphabet, are facing numerous lawsuits from states, local governments, schools, and individuals regarding the alleged harmful effects of their products on young users. During the trial’s opening statements, California’s deputy attorney general, Megan O’Neill, emphasized that Meta’s business strategy involved engaging users, collecting their data, and concealing the truth from the public, particularly targeting children.

Meta’s legal counsel, Paul Schmidt, acknowledged the challenges faced by some social media users but contested any clear connection between adolescents’ social media usage and their well-being. Schmidt highlighted Meta’s commitment, led by co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, to enhancing services rather than endangering users. The trial’s jury is anticipated to provide an advisory verdict, which the presiding U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers will consider in determining Meta’s accountability. If Meta is found liable, civil penalties and alterations to Facebook and Instagram could be imposed, with potential penalties reaching up to $1.4 trillion US, nearly equivalent to the company’s market value.

The states, including California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey, are pushing for Meta to revamp Facebook and Instagram by removing features like likes and infinite scrolling, imposing time restrictions for younger users, and implementing measures to keep children under 13 off the platforms. As the trial progresses, witnesses like former Meta safety engineer Arturo Bejar are providing testimony, shedding light on Meta’s alleged disregard for child safety and its internal practices. The trial is expected to continue for six weeks, with testimonies from top Meta executives like Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram chief Adam Mosseri anticipated.

Outside the courtroom, critics of Meta voiced concerns about the impact of social media on children, with some sharing personal tragedies linked to online platforms. The trial, which commenced after years of scrutiny and previous legal actions against Meta, signifies a crucial examination of the responsibilities and practices of major tech companies in shaping the digital landscape and safeguarding young users.
