A woman shared her experience of owning a large 13-stone dog that is often mistaken for a wolf but is actually a gentle giant. The Alaskan Malamute named Mal, standing over 6 feet tall on his hind legs, was adopted as a puppy by Amy Sharp and diagnosed with canine gigantism by vets. Mal’s size requires an annual feeding cost of over £1,000, but Amy has no regrets about having him as a pet.
Despite expecting Mal to weigh less than six stone, Amy was surprised when he exceeded 13 stone. Being 5ft 3ins herself, Amy attracts attention during Mal’s daily walks, with onlookers sometimes mistaking him for a wolf. Mal’s diva-like behavior includes being picky about his food, which consists of kibble, low-fat treats, supplements, and vitamins due to his size.
Amy mentioned the challenges of finding someone to groom Mal due to his size and persuading him to walk home when he decides to be stubborn. Despite his imposing presence, Mal is described as a gentle giant who enjoys his walks and sometimes demands more. Amy humorously remarked that in Mal’s world, they are all just living in it.
