McDonald’s enthusiasts are expressing dissatisfaction following a viral social media post that revealed the soaring cost of a hash brown, reaching almost £2 at select restaurants.
The viral post featured an image of a McDonald’s menu board displaying the price of a hash brown at £1.99 in the specific restaurant location. The post garnered over 459,000 views and was accompanied by a comment expressing dismay at the high price.
Reactions to the post varied, with one individual noting the significant price increase from what was once a budget-friendly option. Others chimed in, suggesting alternative menu items at a similar price point and expressing disbelief at the new cost.
Some commenters reminisced about the days when hash browns were priced at 59p, highlighting the substantial price hike over time.
In response to the uproar, a spokesperson for McDonald’s clarified that franchise-operated restaurants have the autonomy to set their own prices, leading to variations in pricing across locations. The spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering a quality dining experience and value to customers.
This controversy comes on the heels of McDonald’s announcement regarding changes to their MyMcDonald’s Rewards program. Starting March 17, the points required to redeem free items like a Big Mac or Chicken Nuggets will increase from 5,500 to 6,500 points, with customers earning 100 points for every £1 spent.
Additionally, the points needed for items such as a Medium Coffee, McFlurry, or Double Cheeseburger will also see an increase, attributed by a McDonald’s representative to the impact of rising food and supply costs. Despite the adjustments, new redemption options like Chicken Selects and Sausage Sandwiches have been introduced to provide more choices for customers.
