A man convicted of killing his estranged wife and mistreating her body has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Zarbab Ali, 29, will spend the rest of his life behind bars for the murder of Rachael Castillo, 25, with whom he shared two children. Castillo had filed for divorce, which was nearly finalized when Ali attacked her at her sister’s apartment.
Ali, after dropping off their two sons at his parents’ home, returned to the apartment where he found Castillo alone. He confronted her in a dark hallway and fatally stabbed her multiple times. Ali then wrapped her body in a blanket, cleaned up the crime scene, and placed her in the trunk of his car before burying her in Littlerock, California.
Following the discovery of signs of violence at the apartment, including bloody items in a nearby dumpster, authorities found Castillo’s body buried in the desert near Littlerock on November 13, 2022. Ali was arrested the same day and later pleaded guilty to various charges, including murder. During his trial, a video of Ali confessing to his gruesome acts was shown.
At the sentencing hearing, Castillo’s family described her as more than just a victim, highlighting her role as a loving mother, sister, daughter, and friend with aspirations for her and her children’s futures. They addressed Ali directly, condemning his cowardly actions and emphasizing the impact on the innocent children whose lives were forever altered by his brutality.
