A man was apprehended following an incident where a woman was allegedly coerced into a park by an armed stranger who proceeded to assault her. The reported assault occurred at approximately 9:30 pm on Tuesday, September 9 at Heaton Mersey Park in Stockport. Police officers from Greater Manchester Police responded to the scene promptly and engaged with the victim shortly after the assault. The suspect, a 28-year-old male, was taken into custody within an hour of the incident being reported and remains detained.
According to the victim’s statement, she was approached by a man who compelled her to accompany him, appearing to carry a firearm. Upon reaching the park, the man allegedly committed the assault, but the victim managed to escape shortly thereafter. The suspect purportedly fled the scene soon after the incident.
Law enforcement authorities are conducting investigations in the vicinity to offer reassurance to the local community. The firearm in question has been confiscated for examination to determine its functionality.
Superintendent Dave Henthorne remarked, “Stranger rape is fortunately a rare occurrence in Greater Manchester. However, when such incidents do arise, it is crucial that we act swiftly and decisively to prevent further harm. The victim’s ordeal was undeniably harrowing, and our primary focus is to provide her with the necessary support through our specialized officers. Her courage in coming forward is commendable.”
