The renowned London Underground map, renowned for its extensive network covering diverse zones and neighborhoods, has undergone changes over the years.
For almost twenty years, a particular station was absent from the intricate design of the map, raising curiosity about its disappearance.
Located in Zone 2 of West London, Kensington (Olympia) serves as a tranquil rail and tube stop, currently accessible via the London Overground and the District line. It offers a convenient route to bypass Zone 1 since all Overground services operate exclusively within Zone 2.
However, if we rewind to 1940, Olympia had a different role altogether. Originally established as Kensington station in 1844, it faced closure due to lack of popularity within the same year. Reopened in 1862 with new services, including the Metropolitan line, the station was later renamed Kensington Addison Road in 1868.
During the Second World War, bombing of the Metropolitan line led to the shutdown of West London stations on the line. Despite this setback, Kensington station’s strategic location proved beneficial. Not only did it boast rail connections across London, but its proximity to the headquarters of the Commander of the Allied Forces, led by Dwight D Eisenhower, made it a preferred travel spot for him in 1944 during the preparations for the Normandy landings.
In 1946, the station was rebranded as Kensington (Olympia) and began transporting employees of the Post Office Savings Bank. Due to the National Secrets Act, the station’s existence remained confidential until its official acknowledgment in 1958.
That year, Kensington (Olympia) saw enhancements with the addition of a permanent platform and a District line shuttle service to Earl’s Court. Following a significant renovation, the station implemented more frequent schedules, introduced a community garden, and underwent a facelift.
Despite these upgrades, train services at Kensington (Olympia) remain sporadic, distinguishing it as one of London’s few part-time stations.
