First-time homebuyers are set to benefit from a significant financial boost with reports indicating the removal of the penalty charge associated with the Lifetime ISA.

A revised edition of the Lifetime ISA is expected to be introduced in April 2028. Currently, the Lifetime ISA can be utilized for purchasing your first home or retirement planning.

This savings scheme enables individuals to save up to £4,000 annually, receiving a 25% bonus from the Government, equating to a potential free £1,000 every tax year.

Previously, using the Lifetime ISA savings for purposes other than a first home purchase or retirement incurred a withdrawal penalty, leading to the loss of both the bonus and part of the original savings.

The upcoming version of the Lifetime ISA is rumored to eliminate this withdrawal penalty. The property eligible for purchase using the Lifetime ISA must not exceed £450,000 under the existing regulations.

Since its inception in 2017, this cap has been in place, prompting advocacy for its adjustment to align with the escalating house prices.

No confirmation has been provided yet regarding a potential increase in this limit in the new model. Additionally, reports suggest that the retirement aspect of the Lifetime ISA will be phased out by 2028.

In other news, Rightmove has unveiled the 25 towns that experienced the most significant surge in house prices during 2025. Topping the list is Hawick in Roxburghshire, where the average home price rose by 18% to £148,633.

Durham secured the second position with a 15% increase in average prices to £251,339, followed by Stannington in Sheffield, witnessing a 12% hike to £264,078.

The list predominantly features regions with lower prices, reflecting a national average of £270,711 across the top 50 areas, nearly £100,000 below the overall average.

Furthermore, an estimated 29% of UK adults encountered postal delays with Royal Mail over the Christmas period, as highlighted by Citizens Advice. This accounts for around 16 million individuals facing issues with letters and cards, marking a 50% surge compared to December 2024.
