Liberal Member of Parliament Shaun Chen announced his forthcoming resignation at the end of this week due to enduring health complications resulting from a car accident last year. Representing Scarborough North since 2015, Chen disclosed on social media that the accident left him with substantial health challenges, impeding his ability to travel to Ottawa as required for his parliamentary duties. Following discussions with his family, Chen concluded that stepping down from his position was the best course of action. Prior to his tenure as an MP, Chen served as the chair of the Toronto District School Board.
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed gratitude for Chen’s efforts in advocating for youth and combating racism. Carney wished Chen a swift recovery and success in his future endeavors, acknowledging Chen’s ongoing impact in the years ahead. Chen’s resignation adds to the recent trend of MPs relinquishing their seats this summer.
Among those stepping down are former Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault and Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall. Additionally, Conservative MP Larry Brock will vacate his seat in mid-September to join the Brantford Crown attorney’s office, while NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice plans to depart his Montreal seat to pursue provincial candidacy for Québec Solidaire in October. Chen is scheduled to formally resign on Saturday.
