A woman from Laois, Ireland, faced a remarkable recovery after a severe accident resulted in the loss of her entire forehead. Grainne Kealy was a passenger in her boyfriend’s car when it skidded on ice and collided with a wall in Borris-in-Ossory. She had her feet up on the dashboard when the crash occurred, causing her knees to strike her face at a high speed due to the airbag deployment.
The impact in December 2006 left Grainne, then 22, with multiple facial fractures, a brain leak, and necessitated the surgical removal of her forehead. Following 16 reconstructive surgeries, she received a custom Italian ceramic forehead in 2009, two years after living without a forehead.
Grainne shared her journey on social media, highlighting the drastic change in her appearance over the years. Despite the transformation, she admitted to still feeling self-conscious about her looks. She emphasized the importance of car safety, urging people to avoid placing their feet on the dashboard to prevent similar accidents.
Now residing in New Zealand, Grainne remains an advocate for road safety, emphasizing the unpredictability of accidents. She disclosed that she has no recollection of the period leading up to the crash or the aftermath, underscoring the lasting impact of the traumatic incident.
