A language instructor set out on a solitary trek to commemorate a personal milestone, but found himself in a more adventurous situation than expected when he encountered an armed guard carrying an M16 machine gun. Stephen Low, who had just completed his first year teaching English near the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea, unknowingly relied on his language teaching expertise to navigate this unexpected encounter.
In celebration of his achievement, Stephen, now 48, ventured to a popular trail near the North-South border, where remnants of war and sniper huts served as stark reminders of the tensions in the region. What was meant to be a quiet farewell adventure quickly turned into a surreal experience reminiscent of an action movie.
As he approached the summit, the temperature dropped, prompting Stephen to seek refuge in one of the mountain’s huts. Using a copy of the book Twilight as kindling for a fire, an unintentional smoke signal attracted a group of soldiers, leading to a misunderstanding that escalated the situation. Disoriented, Stephen inadvertently strayed into a restricted military testing zone, where explosions and rockets added to the chaos.
Despite the unexpected turn of events, the day’s challenges continued as darkness fell, and Stephen encountered a swarm of bees, forcing him to strip down to his Union Jack boxers to avoid being stung. With the help of a local beekeeper who directed him back towards town, Stephen eventually found himself on the verge of home, only to be halted by an armed sentry guarding what appeared to be a harmless park but was actually a military compound.
In a bid to prove his innocence and avoid a potentially dangerous misunderstanding, Stephen called a former Korean student who convinced the guard to escort him safely through the base. Reflecting on the day’s events, Stephen recalled the mix of relief, terror, and humor that defined his journey, emphasizing the importance of language skills in navigating unforeseen circumstances.
Despite the ordeal, Stephen returned to the trail a decade later to achieve his initial goal of reaching the mountain’s helipad. Currently residing in Norwich, he continues to embrace his passion for teaching and language learning. Offering advice to fellow travelers, Stephen stressed the significance of learning key phrases in a foreign language for effective communication and potential lifesaving situations.
