After securing a significant win in the last summer’s election, Keir Starmer has faced repeated inquiries about his government’s core principles. Responding to these queries, the Prime Minister unveiled a long-awaited plan to decrease child poverty by 550,000 by the end of the decade. In an article for The Mirror coinciding with the release of the government’s child poverty strategy, Starmer emphasized that eradicating child poverty is the fundamental mission of Labour.

This initiative has appeased restless Labour MPs, who have been urging the government to articulate its values. A Labour MP expressed satisfaction, stating that moving children out of poverty is a fundamental responsibility of a Labour government. The MP highlighted previous successful efforts under Gordon Brown’s administration to alleviate child poverty and criticized the Tories for exacerbating the issue.

The new strategy includes abolishing the controversial two-child benefit limit, a divisive policy in recent years. By scrapping this policy, Labour has drawn a distinct line separating its stance from that of the Tories. Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, known for his work on child poverty, has been a vocal advocate for ending the two-child benefit limit, accusing the Tories of spreading falsehoods about families in need.

Despite the positive reception of the child poverty strategy among Labour MPs, some remain cautious. While the plan aims to lift 550,000 children out of poverty within five years, there are concerns about the absence of clearly defined targets to measure progress. Additionally, some MPs see the upcoming May elections as a potential challenge for Labour.

Overall, the Labour Party’s focus on addressing child poverty has garnered support internally, but questions remain about the strategy’s effectiveness and the need for concrete benchmarks to track progress.
