Keir Starmer has expressed gratitude for NHS staff, volunteers, and armed forces personnel working this festive season. In his Christmas address from No10, the Prime Minister commended those donning uniforms and assisting those in need, highlighting their dedication and sacrifice. He emphasized the vital roles played by healthcare workers, emergency services, armed forces, and volunteers in safeguarding the nation and extending support to those facing challenges.

Additionally, Starmer acknowledged the financial burdens faced by many individuals, pledging to address this issue as a top priority. He encouraged people to show kindness during the holiday season, reaching out to neighbors, friends, and relatives who may be experiencing difficulties. The Prime Minister’s gesture of hosting a Christmas dinner for public sector workers at Downing Street was also mentioned, underscoring the importance of recognizing their contributions.

Research by the Trades Union Congress revealed that approximately 1.2 million individuals, including healthcare professionals, nurses, and retail workers, will be working on Christmas Day. The General Secretary, Paul Nowak, urged the public to appreciate the efforts of those working tirelessly to maintain essential services during the holiday period. Nowak praised the Employment Rights Bill, recently enacted into law, as a positive step towards improving working conditions, particularly for individuals on zero-hours contracts.

Moving forward, the implementation of the Employment Rights Act is expected to bring about significant improvements in workers’ rights, including day one sick pay and a ban on exploitative contracts. Nowak emphasized the importance of providing workers with increased job security, fair wages, and dignity in the workplace, stating that the legislation marks a positive development for individuals across various sectors.
