Keir Starmer criticized Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs on countries opposing his attempt to acquire Greenland as “misguided” during a series of conversations today, including one with the US President.

The British Prime Minister engaged in an urgent discussion with the US President following concerns raised by NATO members, including the UK, about the potential negative impact of Mr. Trump’s threats regarding Greenland tariffs on international relations.

A statement from Downing Street highlighted that the Prime Minister had talks with several leaders before speaking with President Trump. In these discussions, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his stance on Greenland, emphasizing the importance of security in the Arctic region for all NATO allies and denouncing the imposition of tariffs on allies working towards collective security as inappropriate.

President Trump recently announced plans to impose 10% tariffs on various countries, including the UK, for their opposition to his desire to acquire Greenland. He also threatened to increase tariffs on NATO partners to 25% by June 1 if a deal for buying Greenland is not sealed promptly.

Cabinet ministers, including Keir Starmer, branded the tariff threats as “entirely unjustified.” In a joint statement, several European nations, including Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK, expressed solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, emphasizing their commitment to Arctic security and sovereignty.

Lisa Nandy, the UK’s Culture Secretary, affirmed the country’s unwavering stance on Greenland despite Trump’s warnings. Nandy stressed the UK’s position that Greenland’s future should be determined by the people of Greenland and Denmark. The UK government aims to maintain a constructive relationship with the US while firmly upholding its position on Greenland.

French President Emmanuel Macron and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also rejected intimidation tactics, with EU ambassadors convening for urgent discussions in response to the threats.
