Keir Starmer has responded to Donald Trump’s unconventional threat of imposing tariffs on Greenland.

The US President warned that the UK and seven other countries would face 10% tariffs on all exports to the US if they continued to oppose his attempts to acquire Greenland. Trump indicated that the tariff could escalate to 25% by June if his Greenland acquisition ambitions were not met.

In his statement, Starmer reiterated the UK’s stance that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, emphasizing that its future should be determined by the Greenlanders and Danes. He highlighted the importance of Arctic Security within NATO and emphasized the need for allies to collaborate in addressing security challenges in the Arctic region. Starmer condemned the idea of imposing tariffs on allies for supporting NATO’s collective security, labeling it as inappropriate.

Trump’s remarks included claims that China and Russia were interested in Greenland and suggested that the US, under his leadership, was the only suitable guardian for the region due to national security concerns.

Recent developments saw the UK deploying a military officer to Greenland in response to Denmark’s increased military presence in the Arctic and High North.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed support for the sovereignty of nations and emphasized the importance of defending principles and security. Macron announced France’s decision to participate in Denmark’s activities in Greenland to address security issues in the Arctic region.

Lib Dem leader Ed Davey criticized Trump’s actions, calling for a united front with European and Commonwealth allies to counter the US President’s tariff threats. Kemi Badenoch and Nigel Farage also denounced the tariffs, highlighting the negative impact on both the UK and US economies.

The escalating tensions over Greenland have raised concerns about global peace and security, with European leaders preparing to respond collectively if the tariffs are enforced. Macron indicated plans to engage with European partners to address the situation diplomatically.
