Jessica Pegula, known for being one of the wealthiest tennis stars globally, has speculated that Andy Murray may have taken on the role of Novak Djokovic’s coach out of pure curiosity. Shortly after retiring from professional tennis in 2024, Murray surprised the tennis community by announcing his decision to coach the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
The duo collaborated leading up to the Australian Open, where Djokovic reached the semi-finals before withdrawing due to injury. In May, it was confirmed that their coaching partnership had ended by mutual agreement, only six months after they joined forces.
During an episode of The Players Box podcast with Jennifer Brady, Desirae Krawczyk, and Madison Keys, Pegula, who has a net worth of nearly £15 million and is set to inherit a £5.5 billion fortune, suggested that Murray might have been intrigued by the chance to gain a deeper understanding of Djokovic’s mindset.
Pegula commented, “I believe he was very intrigued. He probably thought, ‘This is so peculiar, I am so curious. Why do you want me to coach you, but I am also fascinated by how your mind works and your decision-making on the court.’ I witnessed them together, and it was quite interesting.”
Keys also found the partnership between Murray and Djokovic unusual, supporting Pegula’s view that Murray sought insights into Djokovic’s competitive edge.
Murray and Djokovic have openly discussed their coaching arrangement. Murray mentioned in an interview with The Times in June that he saw coaching Djokovic as a unique opportunity that he couldn’t pass up. Djokovic, on the other hand, stated that they both felt they had reached the limit of what they could achieve together on the court.
Despite the split, Djokovic expressed gratitude for the experience and the opportunity to work with Murray. He emphasized Murray’s exceptional tennis knowledge and insights, highlighting the value of their time together despite the results not meeting their expectations.
