President Donald Trump mentioned that Iran has expressed a desire to engage in negotiations following his recent warning to the country amidst ongoing demonstrations resulting in at least 544 reported deaths.

Iran has not yet responded directly to this development, which follows a visit by Oman’s foreign minister to Tehran, a key intermediary between Tehran and Washington. The specifics of what Iran could offer in negotiations remain uncertain, especially given Trump’s stringent demands concerning Iran’s nuclear program and ballistic missile capabilities, which Iran views as essential for its defense.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, addressing foreign diplomats in Tehran, asserted that the situation is now under control, attributing the violence to Israel and the U.S. without providing evidence to support the claim.

In response to the protests challenging the authority of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran has called on pro-government supporters to demonstrate their allegiance. State television broadcasted footage of crowds chanting anti-American and anti-Israeli slogans.

The Trump administration is reportedly considering various options for potential actions against Iran, including cyberattacks and military strikes by the U.S. or Israel. Trump mentioned that the military is assessing the situation and emphasized readiness to respond forcefully if necessary.

Trump indicated ongoing efforts to arrange a meeting with Iranian officials but acknowledged the possibility of preemptive actions due to escalating violence and arrests of protesters. He stated that Iran has shown interest in negotiations despite the current circumstances.

Iran’s parliamentary speaker warned that the U.S. military and Israel could become legitimate targets if they intervene to protect demonstrators. The Human Rights Activists News Agency reported over 10,600 detentions and provided details on the death toll, with a majority of the casualties being protesters.

Amidst an internet blackout and restricted communication in Iran, gauging the extent of the protests has become challenging. Concerns are raised about a potential violent crackdown by hardliners within Iran’s security apparatus. Reports indicate ongoing demonstrations despite the security measures implemented.

Authorities in Iran have issued warnings to the public, cautioning against participation in protests due to perceived security threats and potential violent outcomes. Messages from law enforcement and intelligence agencies emphasize the risks posed by engaging in unrest.

The protests initially sparked by economic grievances have evolved into broader challenges against Iran’s ruling regime. The demonstrations began with economic frustrations related to the devaluation of the rial and have since transformed into direct confrontations with the country’s political establishment.
