Instagram has moved to calm its users by refuting claims that the data of over 17 million users had been compromised. Reports emerged yesterday regarding leaked account information following an influx of password reset emails.
Previously, cybersecurity company Malwarebytes stated that the leaked data included usernames, addresses, phone numbers, and emails of 17.5 million Instagram accounts. The firm warned that this information was being sold on the dark web for potential misuse by cybercriminals.
Contrary to these reports, Instagram clarified that there was no breach on their systems. They explained that an issue allowing an external party to request password reset emails for some users had been promptly addressed.
Despite Instagram’s reassurance, users remained skeptical and questioned how an external party could trigger password resets without a breach occurring. Some users expressed concerns and frustration over the security of their accounts.
Instagram recommended several measures to enhance account security, including enabling two-factor authentication using methods like phone numbers or authenticator apps. They emphasized the importance of keeping contact information updated to facilitate account recovery in case of unauthorized changes.
In light of recent events, Instagram is urging users to take necessary precautions to safeguard their accounts and personal information.
