Sean Jefferson, 35, and Amy Clarke, 34, have pleaded not guilty to charges of murdering Darcy-Leigh and causing or permitting her death.
During the trial at Stafford Crown Court, it was revealed that Darcy-Leigh passed away on March 29, 2022, shortly after being admitted to the hospital. The court learned that Clarke resided in a seemingly orderly home in Hudson Drive, Burntwood, Staffordshire, despite her excessive alcohol consumption and cocaine use.
Prosecutor Harpreet Sandhu KC outlined that Darcy-Leigh, born prematurely on February 20, 2022, was a fragile infant weighing just over four pounds. Her tragic death two days after hospitalization was attributed to a severe brain injury likely caused by violent shaking or blunt force trauma.
Sandhu emphasized that the parents were responsible for Darcy-Leigh’s care when the fatal head injury occurred. He detailed the extensive physical abuse the infant endured, including the 47 rib fractures sustained through multiple assaults. Additionally, Darcy-Leigh had leg fractures, likely caused by twisting or shaking.
The court heard that despite several professional visits, an error prevented Darcy-Leigh’s registration on a child protection information system. Sandhu highlighted the tumultuous relationship between Jefferson and Clarke, marked by threats and substance abuse, shedding light on the tragic circumstances surrounding Darcy-Leigh’s repeated assaults and untimely death.
