On VJ Day, the ultimate triumph in a war that reshaped the world was celebrated. It’s a day to honor the brave individuals who served in the Far East with enduring gratitude.
Before becoming the Labour MP for Dover and Deal, I dedicated more than 5 years to the UK Armed Forces, undertaking three operational tours – one in Iraq and two in Afghanistan. Witnessing firsthand the enduring spirit of those who served during World War II reflected in today’s servicemen and women is truly inspiring.
Yet, the toll of conflict is evident – the lives lost, families uprooted, and communities torn apart. It’s crucial to commemorate and respect the contributions of our VJ Day veterans by listening to their experiences, ensuring the past’s lessons remain alive, and their sacrifices are never forgotten.
In a world facing escalating instability, it’s vital to back our commitment to peace and security with unwavering support for those defending it. The current Labour government, in power for just over a year, is resolute in renewing the nation’s bond with its defenders. Key initiatives include enshrining the Armed Forces Covenant in law and appointing an Armed Forces Commissioner.
While progress continues, accomplishments like reclaiming 36,000 military residences into public ownership and allocating over £7 billion across this Parliament to enhance neglected housing are notable achievements.
As the Prime Minister pledged at the NATO Summit in June to elevate national security spending to 5% of GDP by 2035, it’s a fitting moment to pay tribute to our VJ Day heroes, honor the fallen, and acknowledge the ongoing dedication of our armed forces in upholding their esteemed legacy.
