A medical professional who completed studies at Harvard University has revealed a common fruit that could have negative effects on gut health. This particular fruit is a staple in many fruit bowls due to its affordability at supermarkets.

Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist with a substantial Instagram following, has shared insights on fruit consumption. In a recent video garnering over 1.5 million views, he ranked various fruits based on their impact on gut health. Grapes landed in the second-to-last spot, while oranges, melons, and pears followed in the rankings.

According to Dr. Sethi, blueberries are the top choice for gut health due to their high anthocyanin and soluble fiber content, which nourishes gut microbes and reduces inflammation. Surprisingly, very ripe bananas were deemed the worst option as the resistant starch in them can lead to digestion issues.

Dr. Sethi recommends opting for slightly unripe bananas if ripe ones are not available, as the gut-friendly fermentation of starch by microbes produces beneficial short-chain fatty acids for the colon. He also advises against consuming grapes excessively due to their high sugar content, suggesting pomegranates as a healthier alternative.

Pomegranates are praised for their polyphenols and antioxidants that support beneficial bacteria and enhance gut microbial diversity. Oranges offer vitamin C and some soluble fiber, although not as much as pomegranates. While melons are refreshing, they are low in fiber and may spike glucose levels if consumed alone, making pears a better choice for their high fiber content and satiety-promoting properties.

For a healthy snack, Dr. Sethi recommends apples and kiwis, noting their gut-protective qualities, digestive benefits, and low sugar content. It is advised by health experts to consume at least five servings of various fruits and vegetables daily to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers. These servings can be in the form of fresh, frozen, canned, dried, or juiced produce.
