Protests have broken out in Greenland and Denmark in defiance of President Donald Trump’s repeated threats to take over the island territory. Trump vowed to impose additional tariffs on nations that oppose his annexation plans.

A large number of protesters flooded the streets of Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, proudly waving the red and white flag of the island territory and asserting that it is not up for sale. Trump argues that US control of Greenland is crucial for national security, a claim strongly disputed by Denmark. Denmark stated that the US is allowed to station more troops on the island but emphasized that it would not negotiate the fate of Greenland’s people with Washington DC.

In response to the pushback from Denmark and other nations, Trump announced intentions to impose a 10% tariff on the UK and other countries, with a potential increase to 25% on June 1 until an agreement is reached for the full acquisition of Greenland.

Keir Starmer, in opposition to Trump’s actions, emphasized that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and its future should be determined by Greenlanders and Danes. Starmer stressed the importance of Arctic security within NATO and criticized the imposition of tariffs on allies for pursuing collective security goals. He pledged to address this matter directly with the US administration.

A survey conducted in January 2025 by Verian revealed that the vast majority of Greenlanders either support independence or wish to remain part of Denmark, with only 6% expressing a desire to join the US. Any attempt to forcibly take Greenland, a territory of NATO member Denmark, would require NATO allies to intervene.

Greenlanders took to the streets in Nuuk to voice their opposition to US involvement, reiterating their preference for independence or continued affiliation with Denmark. Denmark has historically considered itself a steadfast and dependable ally to the US. Greenland has operated as a self-governing entity within Denmark since 2009.
