In a bold move, a resident of Greenland has voiced support for Trump’s push for a US acquisition of the Danish territory, warning the UK about potential consequences. Jorgen Boassen, a 51-year-old bricklaying company owner, is among a few advocating for American control of Greenland.
Boassen, self-identified as a “revolutionary,” leads the “Make Greenland American” campaign despite facing personal sacrifices, including strained relationships with his fiancée and daughter. The controversial proposal, endorsed by President Trump citing security benefits, has triggered strong opposition.
Greenland’s Prime Minister criticized Trump’s approach as bullying, intensifying tensions in the autonomous region with fewer than 60,000 inhabitants. Boassen revealed rifts within his own family due to his pro-US stance, alleging repercussions like his partner’s dismissal from a long-standing position with Air Greenland.
Describing a climate of fear and social ostracism, Boassen highlighted the suppression of pro-American sentiments in Greenland. He expressed concerns about escalating tensions leading to a potential civil conflict, pointing out widespread firearm ownership on the island.
Boassen cautioned against potential bloodshed, cautioning European nations to tread carefully amid the Greenland-Denmark-US dispute. The territorial dispute has strained transatlantic relations, with Denmark cautioning against a US takeover potentially jeopardizing NATO.
UK’s Sir Keir Starmer reiterated the stance of Greenland’s sovereignty during a conversation with President Trump, affirming that the fate of Greenland should be determined by its residents and Denmark alone. The contentious issue remains a focal point in the ongoing geopolitical discourse.
