A British woman who disappeared from a sunbed on a beach in Greece was found dead from drowning, authorities have confirmed.
Michele Bourda, 59, vanished in the Greek city of Kavala on August 1 while her husband Chris, 66, was asleep on Ofrynio beach. Her belongings were left behind, and when Chris woke up, she was missing. The couple, from Glasgow, had been on a two-week holiday and had gone for a swim before resting on nearby sun loungers.
After a month-long search, police located Michele’s body on a small island named Fidonisi, about 40km away from where she was last seen. Greek authorities have ruled out foul play, stating that she likely drowned. Michele was identified by the tankini she wore when she disappeared.
Forensic scientist Nikos Kifnidis confirmed that Michele’s death was due to drowning, with no other injuries present. The swimsuit she was wearing and evidence of a previous operation on her chest were crucial in the identification process.
Chris expressed devastation upon the identification of his wife’s remains, criticizing the delayed search efforts by the harbor police. He emphasized that Michele would not have left without essential items like money, glasses, or medication.
Chris recalled the last moments he spent with Michele, noting her previous struggles with depression and anxiety. He also criticized the lack of urgency shown by the Greek Police in handling the investigation.
Despite his frantic efforts to find Michele after realizing she was missing, Chris felt ignored by authorities and locals. He highlighted the absence of police presence on the beach when his wife disappeared.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) confirmed their support for the deceased woman’s family and engagement with local authorities in Greece.
