For many in my generation, Gen Z, the allure of living abroad and experiencing a cinematic 20s lifestyle is a prevalent dream. Interestingly, even after residing abroad for an extended period, I find myself nostalgic for my time in Spain, yearning for the chance to return. Seeking a British equivalent of the ‘American Dream,’ my parents opted for a major change 11 years ago, relocating our entire lives from the tranquil Costa Brava town of Empuriabrava to London, the bustling capital of the UK.
At 14, my main concerns revolved around spending time with friends and embracing the typical teenage life in Spain. Adjusting to the British way of life proved challenging; I was unfamiliar with the tradition of rushing to the ice cream truck for a classic 99 Flake after school. Instead of socializing post-school hours, I often found myself at home completing homework, indifferent to making plans.
The transition was not easy, considering the vast distances between boroughs in the UK, unlike the close-knit environment of a small town where making friends was effortless. Even at 25, the struggle to adapt to this change remains relatable.
Despite the initial challenges, my teenage years in the UK were enriching, filled with cherished memories that I hold dear. Reflecting on my past in Spain, I often ponder how my life would have unfolded if my parents hadn’t taken such a bold step. While the alternate path remains unknown, I harbor no regrets.
