After relocating to Vancouver from Johannesburg in 2018, Caitlyn Moony, a former social researcher from South Africa, had high hopes for her new home. Drawn by the city’s natural beauty and the presence of family, she anticipated an easy transition to Canadian life. However, her initial excitement waned as she struggled to find her place in Vancouver’s job market and social scene.
Despite the stunning landscape and unique charm of the city, Moony soon realized that her expectations did not align with reality. Without established connections or local work experience, she faced challenges landing a fulfilling job and felt isolated in a city where she struggled to fit in. The allure of Vancouver’s outdoor activities and cultural offerings faded amidst the daily grind of long work hours and cramped living conditions.
Moony’s discontent with Vancouver grew as she yearned for the sense of community she had experienced in other places she had lived. Feeling adrift in a city where she struggled to connect with others, she eventually made the difficult decision to leave for London in search of a more vibrant and engaging environment.
In London, she found the bustling energy and diverse social opportunities she craved, yet something was amiss. Over time, Moony realized that Vancouver had left a lasting impression on her, shaping her into a person more attuned to the laid-back West Coast lifestyle. Despite its flaws, Vancouver held a special place in her heart, prompting her to return and seek reconciliation with the city she once struggled to embrace.
Now back in Vancouver, Moony reflects on her journey of self-discovery and growth, acknowledging the city’s imperfections while embracing the unique bond she shares with it. As she unpacks her bags and reacquaints herself with the familiar sights and sounds of the city, she hopes for a fresh start, ready to rediscover the beauty and potential that Vancouver has to offer.
