Sky provides various options for streaming TV, such as the Glass TV and Stream box, offering access to premium channels and personalized recommendations. However, a new competitor is emerging in the market.

Freely, launched last year, allows UK households to stream live TV for free on new TVs with built-in services. These TVs connect to the internet to access live channels through broadband instead of an aerial.

To make the service more accessible, Freely, owned by the team behind Freeview, is introducing a new set-top box in direct competition with Sky’s Stream box. Manufactured by Netgem, this device will be available later this year, providing over 40 live channels without the need for an aerial.

The Freely box will feature a full TV guide, a Mini Guide for current and upcoming shows, recommendations, live TV pause functionality, and seven-day backward and forward viewing options. Additionally, the platform promises regular updates for evolving features, channels, and content.

Unlike Sky, Freely’s device offers free content once purchased, eliminating the need for subscription fees. CEO Jonathan Thompson mentioned that the goal of Freely is to make free TV accessible to everyone without requiring TV upgrades or paid subscriptions.

Sylvain Thevenot, Managing Director of Netgem U.K., expressed excitement about introducing the innovative Freely streaming device, highlighting its ability to provide a seamless TV and entertainment experience over Wi-Fi at an affordable price.
