Fire TV Stick users are advised to exercise caution, particularly when adding new applications to their devices. A widely used tool named “Downloader” has been removed from Amazon’s Appstore, leading to the emergence of a fraudulent copycat app targeting users’ finances.
The situation arose when Downloader vanished suddenly from Amazon’s online marketplace over the weekend. For nearly a decade, Downloader has enabled Fire TV owners to search for and install apps not found in official stores, making it a valuable resource for accessing tools and applications that may not be readily available in certain regions or for trying out pre-release software versions.
Despite its popularity, the app has faced a temporary suspension, as indicated by its developer, Elias Saba, who also manages the Fire TV site AFTVnews. Saba explained that a recent update caused Amazon to flag Downloader as a full web browser. Amazon’s policy prohibits third-party browsers on Fire TV devices, leading to the blockage of Downloader.
Amazon confirmed the restriction on third-party browser apps for Fire tablets and Fire TV devices, prompting Saba to address the issue by removing the browser identification in the v2.0.2 update. He anticipates Amazon’s approval shortly to reinstate the app on the Appstore.
While awaiting the resolution, Saba cautioned users about a counterfeit version of Downloader attempting to deceive Fire TV owners into a subscription scam. Saba advised users not to install the fraudulent app and to report it to Amazon. Users with the authentic Downloader installed should retain it until Amazon restores it, disabling Auto Offload to prevent automatic removal.
If Amazon greenlights the fix, Downloader may become available on Fire TV devices later this week, with users advised to monitor the situation closely for updates.
