Residents of Fort McKay, situated in the heart of the oilsands in northern Alberta, are facing heightened levels of dust pollution, as indicated by a recent study published in Atmospheric Pollution Research. The research, led by University of Toronto PhD candidate Kristin Iorio and independent researchers in Alberta, reveals that the community experiences substantial dustfall events, driven by large dust particles that frequently surpass air quality regulations.
The study found that Fort McKay consistently exceeds Alberta Ambient Air Quality Guidelines for dust pollution, with severe dustfall occurrences that are not adequately captured by standard monitoring methods. The data, collected between late 2022 and mid-2025, showed that Fort McKay had significantly higher monthly dustfall volumes compared to other nearby communities.
The research emphasizes the need for improved monitoring of coarse particulate matter, larger than PM2.5 particles, which are currently unregulated in Alberta. With dust pollution originating from various sources such as industrial activities and mining operations, there is a growing concern over the health impacts on residents.
To address these regulatory gaps, the study recommends the establishment of specific guidelines for PM10 contamination and the implementation of real-time monitoring to track dust sources accurately. The study’s findings underscore the necessity for enhanced monitoring practices and updated air quality objectives to safeguard the health of communities like Fort McKay.
